Running on Empty
Tired when you wake up, and no amount of weekend rest seems to fix it.
Men's health · Work stress and burnout
Long hours, targets and the pressure to provide can wear anyone down. If work is taking more than it gives back, you don't have to keep running on empty. Talk to qualified professionals, online or in person.
Rest isn't something you earn. It's something you need.
Understanding work stress
Some pressure at work is normal. Stress becomes a problem when it doesn't let up: you can't switch off, your evenings and weekends disappear, and you start to dread the morning.
Left alone, long-term stress can turn into burnout: a deep exhaustion where you feel detached from your work and stop believing your effort makes a difference. Many men keep going long past this point, because stopping feels like failing.
Long hours and job insecurity affect men in every kind of work.
Burnout comes from what you face, not from who you are.
With the right changes and support, energy and interest come back.
Signs and symptoms
You don't need a diagnosis to ask for help. If any of these feel familiar, we're here.
Tired when you wake up, and no amount of weekend rest seems to fix it.
Checking messages late at night and thinking about work when you should be resting.
Losing interest in work you used to care about, or feeling nothing you do matters.
Snapping at colleagues, your partner or your children over small things.
Headaches, tight shoulders, stomach problems, poor sleep or getting ill more often.
Relying on alcohol, smoking, food or endless scrolling to switch off.
These signs aren't a diagnosis. If you're thinking of harming yourself, call your local emergency number or Tele-MANAS (free, 24/7) at 14416 right away.
Where it comes from
It's rarely one thing. Usually several pressures stack up until there's no room left to recover.
Long days, unrealistic deadlines, shift work and being reachable at all hours.
Job insecurity, debt, EMIs or a business that depends on you.
Feeling that your family relies on you, so you can never slow down or say no.
Difficult managers, conflict, feeling unrecognised or having little control over your work.
Stress or burnout?
Burnout builds gradually. Noticing the early stages makes it much easier to turn around.
You take on more and work longer to keep up, often proving yourself.
Sleep, exercise, friends and hobbies get squeezed out to make room for work.
Irritability, poor sleep and physical symptoms become your normal.
You start to feel numb, cynical and detached from work and from people.
Deep exhaustion, feeling ineffective, and finding it hard to carry on at all.
When to get help
Many men only reach out after a crisis: a health scare, a relationship ending or being unable to get out of bed. You don't need to wait that long. Talking early can help you protect your health, your relationships and your career.
Burnout can also overlap with depression. If low mood is spreading beyond work, it's worth getting checked. Read more about burnout

FAQ
Stress usually feels like too much: too many demands, racing thoughts, a sense of urgency. Burnout feels like not enough: exhausted, detached and running on empty. Stress can lead to burnout if it goes on too long without recovery.
Not usually. Many people recover by changing how they work, setting boundaries and getting support. Sometimes a bigger change is right, but it's better to decide that with a clear head rather than in the middle of burnout.
